Canadian singer/songwriter Alex Sampson is back on the ‘AGT’ stage tonight, performing another retro original song.
Getting four yeses from the America’s Got Talent judges doesn’t always guarantee a spot in the Live Shows. In fact, less than half make it through the Judges Cuts. So when 20-year-old singer/songwriter Alex Sampson found out he was advancing, he and his family had every reason to celebrate.
What made Alex stand out among the singers who didn’t make the cut in Season 19 was his original song, “Pretty Baby.” The tune struck a chord with judges Howie Mandel and Simon Cowell, taking them back to the nostalgic sounds of the ’50s and ’60s.
Back then, Simon told Alex, “If this is the lane you want to go down, I think it’s very smart because you separate yourself from what everybody else is doing. So, I really, really liked this audition.”
As someone who grew up watching Simon on The X-Factor and AGT, Alex took that advice to heart. Tonight, when he returns to the AGT stage, he’ll be performing another original song that honors that timeless era of music.
Alex told Parade, “The song I’m performing on Tuesday follows the same style Simon and Howie loved. Simon thinks staying on this path will help me stand out, so I wrote this song specifically based on their feedback. I didn’t have other songs like it, so I created more after my audition.”
One of those songs was released earlier this month as Alex’s new single, “If You Were My Girl.” With its ‘50s doo-wop vibe, breezy harmonies, and relaxed guitar riffs, it might give a glimpse of what the Canadian singer has in store for tonight’s performance.
Alex explained, “A few months ago, I was at a party talking to a friend about her troubled relationship, and I kept thinking, ‘How could someone like you be treated that way? If you were my girl, I’d treat you so much better.’ That moment inspired me to write the song.”
Only four of the 11 acts performing tonight will advance. Three will be chosen by America’s votes to move on to the semifinals, while one will receive the Live Golden Buzzer and head straight to the finale. Even though it’s his second time on the AGT stage, Alex is still feeling the pressure.
Alex said, “I feel more comfortable this time, but also more stressed because it’s live. There’s no room for mistakes, so it’s a lot more pressure. I’m just going to give it my best shot.”
If Alex wins, he plans to spend the $1 million prize on a mix of practical and fun things.
Alex shared, “I’d start by paying off bills and handling any legal stuff. After that, I’ll celebrate—definitely heading to Hawaii and getting a Jeep Wrangler, which I’ve wanted for years. I also want to pay back my family and enjoy a week in Hawaii because, why not?”
During our Zoom chat, Alex discussed his journey to AGT, his musical influences, long-term goals, and more. Check out his insights below.
